Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu in 1960 and graduated from the Nanjing Academy of Arts in 1987.
In 1992, he studied at the printmaking department of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine
Arts and in 1994 he created paintings in the Yuanmingyuan Artists' Village. In 1995 he left
Yuanmingyuan and began using photography as his main medium of artistic expression. Hong
Lei is one of the leading figures in China's new photography movement in the 1990s and his
photography work is largely influenced by his childhood exposure to art and traditional Chinese
calligraphy and painting. Hong Lei's works are filled with nostalgia. He regards himself as a
literati and creates conceptual paintings, installations, and photographic works regarding the
rapid disappearance of traditional Chinese culture. In his early work, he used posing and set-
ups to rethink traditional Chinese aesthetics and later used digital photography to reproduce
classical Chinese paintings. He also created a black-and-white landscape series and a still-
life series. His works have been collected by many important institutions including the French
