Imai Toshimitsu was born in 1928 in Kyoto, Japan. Received training at Tokyo Art Academy. His
early paintings can be traced to the style of Fauvism. In 1952, he won the Best Rookie Award at
the 15th Salon of the New Production Association. In the same year, he went to Paris to study
medieval history and philosophy. In 1955, influenced by art critic Dapié, his creation turned to
an abstract style. In 1953 Ima Toshimitsu was invited to participate in the São Paulo Biennale.
In 1956 he returned to Japan to hold an exhibition. It was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in
1960; he was awarded the Fifth Tokyo Contemporary Art Exhibition in 1962, which was well-
                                       received.
However, the artist continued to break through the barriers of creation and became enamoured
with symbolic painting. After 1970, Toshimitsu incorporated calligraphy and Japanese cultural
elements into his paintings. In his later works, the theme turned to Japan's invasion of China
and World War II. His works have been collected by the Ohara Museum of Art in Japan, the
National Museum of International Art, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
