                                 extensive tour of Africa in 1978 and was inspired by the brilliant colours of the exotic cultures
                                 and wildlife. The influence of African art can be prominently observed in Shi's aesthetic
                                 expressions and also led to the creation of the artist's famous African Sketches. Shi Hu then
                                 undertook a serious study of Western art, especially Modernism and Abstractionism. He
                                 is skilled in painting figures and animals with strong and unique configurations. He uses a
                                 boneless technique to create a strong contrast of bright colour tones and his brushstrokes are
                                 also bold and strong. Shi Hu was incited to the United States as a visiting scholar and later
                                 settled in Macau. From 1989 onwards, Shi held exhibitions in the United States of America,
                                 Canada, and Singapore, and was appointed as Director of the International Chinese Artists
                                 Association in Macau in 1996. In 2004, a solo exhibition of Shi Hu was held at the National Arts
                                 Museum which later was held in other Asian countries.

                                 Shu Qun was born in Jilin Province. In 1984, Shu Qun was one of the founders of the Northern
                                 Art Group, along with Wang Guangyi, Ren Jian and Liu Yan, among others. In 1982, Shu
                                 graduated from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. In the mid-1980s, he helped
                                 organize conferences and exhibitions, including the 'Large-Scale Slide Exhibition of New Wave
                                 Art' at the Zhuhai Conference (1986) and the Northern Art Group Biennale (Jilin College of the
                                 Arts, Changchun, 1987). In 1987, Shu was interviewed by China Central Television (CCTV), and
                                 in 1989, he participated in the 'China/Avant-Garde Exhibition' at the National Art Museum of
                                 China in Beijing.
                                 Shu published numerous articles in the 1980s and early 1990s, such as 'Form Follows
                                 Content' in Art (Meishu) magazine (no. 7, 1986), 'A Monologue about Rational Painting' in
                                 Jiangsu Pictorial (Jiangsu huakan) (no. 9, 1989) and 'Rational Painting' in Art Panorama (Yishu
                                 guangjiao) (no. 5, 1991). Shu continues to work as an artist in Chengdu and exhibits widely.
