       TSUGUHARA FOUJITA 1920

Born in Tokyo, Japan. Tsuguhara Foujita studied at Tokyo University of the Arts and studied
oil painting under the guidance of the famous artist Kuroda Kiyote. In the 1920s, he created
an oil painting style that combined the charm of ink and wash in Paris. He used the female
body as the main subject, outlined slender ink lines on a milky white background, and applied
dreamy light colours, which were called excellent milky white skin. After exhibiting his works at
the Salon d'Automne in Paris in the 1920s, he became popular among the French people and
became one of the main members of the Paris School of Painting. Tsuguharu Fujita fulfilled
the ideals and mission of the first generation of Japanese oil painters and showed the charm
of Japanese oil painting to Europe for the first time, and he also won a worldwide reputation.
Because Fujita participated in the war paintings organized by the military government during
the Pacific War in the 1940s, after Japan's defeat, Fujita was attacked and criticized as a
representative figure responsible for the war in the art world. In 1949, Foujita sadly left Japan
and returned to Paris. He became a French citizen in 1955, was baptized in 1959, converted to
Christianity, and never set foot in Japan again. Tsuguharu Fujita's artistic career has had ups
and downs, but he has always persisted in his beliefs and gained fame in Europe, America and
Asia. Today, he is still the most famous Japanese artist in France.
