from the contradictions and incongruities of contemporary China. Truth and fiction, the
pursuit of spiritual purity mirrored in minute detail in his paintings, have rendered expressive
through his brushes with his instinct and sentiment. The psychological depth of his painting
language comes to full expression when the fascination in the paintings becomes certain
metaphors drawing from his own experience and the social context. His paintings feature his
understanding of his artistic language and his quest for a formulation adequate to himself.

尚扬（b.1942） 生于湖北，1965年，毕业于湖北艺术学院；1981年，油画硕士研究生毕业。曾任湖北美术学院教授、副院
SHANG YANG 长，中国美术家协会理事、华南师范大学美术研究所所长。现为首都师范大学美术学院教授、首都师范大
学现代美术研究所所长、中国油画学会副主席、中国美术家协会油画艺术委员会委员、北京美协油画艺委

会副主任。作品为中国美术馆、上海美术馆、香港大学美术博物馆、新加坡好藏之美术馆、义大利雷委内
皇宫青年博物馆、国外艺术机构及国内外私人收藏。

Born in Hubei. In 1965, he graduated from the Hubei Academy of Art, and in 1981, he graduated
with a master's degree in oil painting. Works by the National Art Museum of China, Shanghai
Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts of the University of Hong Kong, Art Museum of Singapore's
Good Collections, Youth Museum of the Imperial Palace of the Italian Lei Committee, foreign
art institutions and private collections at home and abroad.
