Born in 1871 in Paris, France, He was a French painter, printmaker, ceramicist, and maker of
stained glass who drew inspiration from French medieval masters, uniting religious and secular
traditions. Rouault was born in Paris during a bombardment of the city, and his early exposure to
art came from his grandfather's collection of lithographs by Honoré Daumier. He studied under
Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, alongside Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.
Rouault's style evolved from academic to Fauvism under the influence of Vincent van Gogh, Paul
Gauguin, and Paul Cézanne. His works often featured dramatic colors, expressive forms, and
religious themes, reflecting his deep Roman Catholic faith. In his later years, Rouault focused more
on religious subjects, particularly the Passion of Christ. He also created prints and illustrations for
various publications. Despite his expressionistic style, Rouault's work retained elements of 19th-
century Realism and Romanticism. He became the first artist in history to be given a state funeral
by the French government. In 1963, his family donated almost 1000 unfinished works to the French
State. Major Exhibitions: 2010-2011, Georges Rouault: The Sacred and the Profane, Bilbao Fine Arts
Museum, Bilbao, Spain; 2009-2010, Georges Rouault, Landscapes, Museum of Modern Art, Troyes,
