Born in 1950 in London, Antony Gormley is a renowned contemporary sculptor. After completing
his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, he spent three years in India before returning to London
to further his education at Goldsmiths, University of London, and the Slade School of Fine Art,
University College London. Gormley is acclaimed worldwide for his sculptures, installations, and
public artworks that explore the relationship between the human body and space. Since the 1960s,
his work has critically engaged with fundamental questions such as human existence, nature, and
the universe, pushing the boundaries of sculpture's potential. Gormley consistently views art spaces
as places where new behaviours, thoughts, and sensations can emerge.
Knighted in 2014, Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. He was awarded the
Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Arts in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award

the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Gormley's public sculptures can be found throughout the UK, including the South Bank, both
sides of the Waterloo Bridge, and the Royal Festival Hall, among other significant public
locations. His distinctive approach involves using the human body as a creative medium,
transforming the material into a new and vibrant form through his study of human structure.
Over the past few decades, he has been at the forefront of Western figurative sculpture,
revitalizing the field with new vitality.
