Li Qing was born in Huzhou, China in 1981. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of
China Academy of Art with a Conferred Master’s Degree in 2007, and became an instructor 5
years later in the same department in 2012. He currently lives in Hangzhou, Shanghai.
Li’s works have been collected all around the world, including Spain, Germany, France,
Switzerland, Norway, Korea, Australia, and in China (Long Museum, K11 Foundation, China
Academy of Art) and many more. He has exhibited numerous solo exhibitions including
at Frieze New York 2017 and 9㎡Museum in Goethe Institute in 2014, and participated in
innumerable group exhibitions including the show Brilliant City by David Zwirner in 2018, and at
Long Museum, Biennele de Vienizia, and more.
His ongoing ‘Window’ series (2013-) borrows the trompe l’oeil technique, combining old wooden
window frames with paintings of colonial architecture, street scenes, and neon lights behind
glass. The resulting view looks out upon a familiar yet illusory landscape, one that reflects the
dramatic economic growth and overwhelming expansion of modern day China, and opens up
dialogues between the past and the present. Li Qing’s recent works extend the illusion to the
interior space, as he incorporates the walls or ‘wallpaper’ that surround his window frames.
Major solo exhibitions: 2012 "Interwoven", Orient Foundation, Macau; 2010 "Drifting", Tomás y
