Born in Philadelphia, Yuskavage received his BFA from Temple University's Tyler School of Art
in 1984 and his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1986. Since 2005, the artist has been
represented by David Zwirner. 2006 saw two simultaneous solo exhibitions at David Zwirner and
Zwirner & Wirth in New York, followed by gallery shows in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017, and a two-
part exhibition in 2018. Her new exhibition of paintings in 2021 marks her seventh solo show at
                                       David Zwirner Gallery.
For more than thirty years, Lisa Yuskavage’s highly original approach to figurative painting
has challenged conventional understandings of the genre. Her work is simultaneously bold,
eccentric, exhibitionist, and introspective. and introspective figures assume the dual role of
subject and object, complicating the viewer's position. Sometimes playful and harmonious,
sometimes frustrated and contradictory, these figures are cast in fantastical compositions
where realistic and abstract elements coexist and color determines meaning. While the artist's
pictorial technique evokes art historical precedents, her subjects are often inspired by popular
culture, creating an underlying dichotomy between high and low and suggesting the sacred and
the profane, harmony and disharmony. However, her work convincingly rejects categorization
and instead adheres to its own emotional formalism, in which the figure and pictorial invention
                                       are of equal importance.
Museums that collect the artist's work include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hammer
