Born in Shanghai in 1980, Yang Yongliang was deeply influenced by Chinese classical culture
from a young age. He graduated from the China Academy of Art with a degree in Visual
Communication in 2003. Currently, he teaches at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, dividing
his time between New York and Shanghai. Inspired by Chinese classical culture, Yang uses
digital media, photography, video, and painting to create works that depict scenes from
traditional Chinese landscape paintings and calligraphy, bridging the gap between Eastern
classical aesthetic beliefs and contemporary art. His works draw from countless urban images,
digitally synthesizing and reconstructing Chinese landscapes. From afar, they appear as vivid
landscape scrolls, but up close, they reveal a microcosm of modern civilization's development.
In 2023, Yang collaborated with Hennessy to create a limited edition of Baccarat for the Year of
the Dragon, with a global limited release of 485 bottles in partnership with the BERNARDAUD
porcelain workshop. Yang's works have been exhibited in major institutions worldwide,
including the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the
National Gallery Singapore, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai,
the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and the Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. His works are held in
the collections of several important art museums and public institutions, including the UCCA
Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, the M+ Sigg Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the British Museum, the Centre Pompidou
in Paris, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. Solo Exhibition: 2018, Salt 14:
