Born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province in 1968. He graduated from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts
in 1991 with a bachelor's degree and currently lives and works in Beijing. In the early 1990s, he
joined the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village, where he began his artistic career. His work spans various
media, including painting, video installations, and graffiti films. Xu's paintings are characterized by
chaotic and unordered lines, creating a minimalist style. He emphasizes the simplicity and purity
of painting, categorizing it into three types: retinal art, imagery art, and created art. Despite the
apparent emotion and dynamism in his works, his creative process is slow-paced and rational.
Through the use of pure colours, he simplifies painting to its most basic state, devoid of complex
thoughts or hidden content, filling the canvas according to his own will. After 2000, he transformed
his history-themed paintings into a style that negatively reproduces electronic graffiti's destruction
and tampering with images. His first experimental film, Rumination(2009), was nominated for
the Best Tiger Award at the 29th Vancouver International Film Festival. His collaboration with Shi
Jiepeng and Huang Xiang on the film Yumen in 2012 was selected for the Berlin Film Festival and
the Mexico Film Festival. In 2012, his experimental art short film Broken Line, co-directed with Xue
Li, was selected for the 9th Beijing Independent Film Festival and the Asian Experimental Film and
