He was born in 1895 in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, China. In 1919, he went to Japan to study,
and in 1921, inspired by Cai Yuanpei's call for "work and study" to study in France, he went to
Paris to study art with the help of his eldest brother Chang Junmin, and began his career in
France. Unlike his contemporaries such as Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian, he did not return
to his home country to pursue his studies, but chose to stay in Paris for the rest of his life,
becoming one of the few Chinese representatives of the Paris School in the 1920s. He became
one of the very few Chinese representatives of the Paris School in the 1920s.
Marrying the qualities of Chinese literati painting and Western modern art, Sanyu developed a
unique style of expression. In the days when he first arrived in Paris, Sanyu was intoxicated by
the romantic milieu of the exotic city, which inspired his basic palette of pink, white, and black,
lending his work a clean elegance rendered by joyous calligraphic lines. However, with the
onset of World War II and the decline of his family’s financial fortunes, the levity evident in his
earlier body of work disappeared. And although his characteristic aloofness remained, his work
eventually took on a touch of gloom. Later, Sanyu found additional inspiration in lacquerware,
injecting healthy doses of folk art into his work, where he teased out simple lines against dark
backgrounds in bold compositions, featuring such themes as nudity, scenery, flowers, and
animals. In his later years, impoverished and forlorn, the artist saw his nostalgia cascading
into his paintings, where small, isolated creatures appear lost and lonely, and even the flowers
in vases and pots seem wistfully frail. In 1966, this expatriate passed away unexpectedly in
his Paris apartment due to a gas leak in his home, writing a legendary conclusion to his life.
In 2005, the Musée Guimet d'Art d'Asia held a major retrospective for him, confirming his
international status as an important member of the Paris School.Solo Exhibitions, 2018 Sanyu's
