Born in Zhongshan, Guangdong in 1911, she studied Western painting at the National Art
College in Beiping from 1926 to 1928, and studied with Mr. Xu Beihong at the Art Department
of the Central University in Nanjing from 1929 to 1930. She studied Chinese painting in Beijing
from 1930 to 1933 with Wang Shansheng, Chen Shaomei, Tang Dingzhi and Qi Baishi, etc. In
1937, she went to Switzerland and England to study and hold a solo exhibition. In 1946, he
joined the Shanghai Artists and Writers Association and became a director. Since the 1980s, she
has visited Argentina, Australia, the United States, Japan, Singapore, Belgium, Luxembourg,
France and Hong Kong to hold the "Wu Zuoren and Xiao Shufang Chinese Painting Exhibition"
and other cultural exchanges, etc. She retired in 1984. Since 1993, she has held solo exhibitions
in Beijing, Suzhou, Zhongshan and Shenzhen, and donated her works to charity. 2001: "75th
Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition of Xiao Shufang at the National Art Museum of China".
2005 passed away.
With herdeep roots in Western painting, Xiao turned to Chinese painting, which is characterized
by a decorative composition of boneless pointillism, a quiet brushwork, a roughly even strength
and speed, and a rhythm that relies mainly on the combination of different colors and shapes of
the objects, with few rhythmic changes of lightness, speed, staccato, and turn. The flowers and
foliage are colorful and rosy, but the style is quiet and graceful, which is not seen in traditional
painting methods, and can be appreciated by the elegant and common people. Her interest in
art and the breadth of her studies are among the best among female artists of the same era,
and her artistic achievements inherit the style of the famous Xiao family in Zhongshan."
