ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES 艺术家简历

highlighting the artist's perfection in his painting skills. This development of Liu Wei reflects a
profound phenomenon, that is, the complete image of Western modernity began to disintegrate
in China, and began to be thoroughly questioned.
In the years following his return from a short stint in Germany in 1999, Liu Wei's art entered
a black period. During this period, he shifted from focusing on things around him to asking
and thinking about people themselves, and the Who am I series is a reflection of those inner
questions he asked of himself. The portraits are filled with messy lines, and the cool gray
tones dominate the entire work. The portraits are blurred with blurred features and stony
expressions, and the figures are dressed in suits, showing an absurd artistic effect. The identity
of such portraits is no longer important; behind them reveals a certain unspeakable spirituality.
Liu Wei's art often presents a sensual expression, and the artist's own delicate sensitivity
makes this expression lead to a kind of extreme, which is free, open and without restriction,
full of strong Liu Wei flavor, with a composition and tension beyond imagination, catching the
viewer off guard and deep in it.
In recent years, Liu Wei has been transcribing classical Chinese poems "The Book of Songs"
every day to strengthen his understanding of ink painting techniques. He believes that the spirit
and psychology of modern man is very similar to that of his ancestors. However, his works are
very different from traditional landscape painting, and are closer to the literati "ink play", which
is simple, wild, mellow and childish. Perhaps Liu Wei's character has two layers - a kernel of
the present world pulsating under a shell of fantasy and ridicule. Liu Wei seems to have the
ability to turn decay into magic. "I will never tolerate repetition." The painter says. None of
his works are exactly the same, not even the prints. Perhaps the only constant in his creative
equation is his self-subversion and insistence on innovation.
Liu Wei's works are now in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA),
the Musée Cantonale de Lausanne (Switzerland), the M+ Art Museum in Hong Kong (Hong
Kong), and the private collection of Swiss collector Uli Schick.
