Born in Shenzhen, China in 1996 and currently lives and works in New York. In 2019, she
graduated with a degree in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of Visual Arts In New
York with the Rhodes Family Award for Outstanding Achievement and obtained a Master of Fine
Arts degree from the same school in 2022 with the MFA Fine Arts Reward. Yuan Fang’s painting
practice begins with self-detachment from the external environment. She felt an anxiety
and uneasiness growing up in a rapidly developing city and constantly experienced a lack of
belonging. Yuan Fang views change, desire, emotions, and memory not as concepts, but as
real, vivid, and tangible experiences. She wants to present a world experienced from a human
perspective where every minute is full of uncertainty, anxiety, restlessness, and struggle. Her
work has been exhibited both within China and overseas with gallery shows in Beijing, New
York, Los Angeles, and more. Her work has been collected by the He Art Museum, X Museum,
and the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art.
