Zhang Ben was born in Mount Huangshan, Anhui in 1984. He graduated from the oil painting
department at the Central Academy of Fine arts in 2006 and obtained a master’s degree
in 2009 from the same institution. His paintings depict highly imaginative landscapes and
worlds, showcasing and revealing the unique loneliness and poetic nature of the artist’s inner
world. The internal logic formed by the visual content of his work allows the audience to feel
the metaphors and symbolism contained within his paintings. While creating his own unique
painting language, Zhang Ben also learned from classical European painting. Although the
symbolic imagery in Zhang Ben's paintings are realistic and concrete, they do not exist in real
life. His works contain spiritual energy.
In recent years, Zhang Ben has traveled around the world, drawing nourishment from art
history. During his travels, he experienced the culture and landscapes of different regions and
reassembled these fragments and personal experiences within his mind. Through realistic
painting techniques, he constructs symbolic and fantastical scenes of foreign lands, allowing
the viewer to have endless space for imagination that goes beyond the image itself.
