                                                            In the mid-to-late 20th century, Hong Kong underwent industrial
       ˜פ൥eˌ൥ٙᖵஔึڗɮπίnnҢႩމᎴӸٙᖵஔdೌሞࡳࡈ೥
        ݼdޫ̀Ո௪ˌ൥dᖵஔ൮˷Րዧɛࡁٙซ྅f™                              restructuring and became an international financial and shipping
                                                            centre, and it also blossomed with diverse artistic and cultural styles.

                                                            It was against this backdrop that Luis Chan, an artistic genius, was
        20 ˰ߏʕܝ໢࠰ಥዝ຾ପุᔷۨdɓᚔϓމ਷ყږፄၾঘ༶ʕːdɰ                    born.
        ၛ׳əεʩٙᖵஔ˖ʷࠬႶfϾ͍݊வᅵٙࣛ˾ߠ౻dிఱ̈ᖵஔփ                      Born in Panama in 1905, he returned to Hong Kong to study at an early
        ʑ { ௓၅ഛf                                            age, and later took a British distance learning course, accumulating
        ௓၅ഛ 1905 ϋ̈͛׵ˋࣅ৵d̼ࣛڏΫ࠰ಥఱኪdܝՌબ׵ߵ਷ߕஔ                  solid basic skills in sculpture, watercolour, oil, ink and so on. In 1935,
        ኪ৫dጐଢ଼əୖྼٙਿ͉̌dᎉՍe˥੹eذ੹e˥ኈഃѩऒᓳᄿعd                     he became the first to hold a solo exhibition in Hong Kong and was
        ԨϞत̈ٙڌତf1935 ϋd˼ί࠰ಥѓ௶ɻ͂ৢֳᑘБࡈ࢝dක࠰ಥ                   favoured by Mr.Andrew Caldecott, the Governor of Hong Kong. After
                                                            1962, he devoted himself to the study of New Painting, experimenting
        ࡈɛ೥࢝ʘ΋ئdᐏಥຖৠᅃ௫€Andrew Caldecottڡຕdਗ਼Չɞ΁             with many new techniques in Western modern painting, presenting
        ˥੹eذ೥Ъۜʮක࢝ͪ׵ಥຖִɽੀf௓၅ഛί 1962 ϋܝΌɢҳɝ                  a natural fusion of East and West. He transformed from a traditional
        ޼Ӻอݼᖭ೥d༊᜕Г˙ତ˾ᖭ೥ʕ஢εอٙҦجձอٙͭఙd௴ி̈                     landscape painter into a later fantasy painter, and after a long
        ɓӻΐจྤᕎփঞሖeᚭˌ൴ତྼ̹ٙ۬ࠬ౻fԨྒྷ༊˸ذ೥e˥੹e                     period of exploration in the 1960s, he achieved a unique creative
        ੹ኈdৣ˸ͭൿձ˓՜ҖόdяତІ್ٙʕГʹፄf˼੽ɓࡈෂ୕ࠬ౻                     perspective. Fish Playing with Figure presented in this auction was
        ೥࢕d໵ᜊމܝԸٙփˌ೥࢕d຾ཀʬɤϋ˾ဘڗٙઞ॰dϓఱəዹत                     created in 1978 and is a representative of his bold attempts in colour
        ٙ௴ЪࠦႶf͉ϣяତՉ௴Ъ׵ 1978 ϋٙ༷௡Ꮥᅂ‘dک݊ίЍ੹e                 and composition of his personal style.
        ࿴ྡɪٙɽᑔྒྷ༊eණࡈɛࠬࣸ׵ɽϓʘЪf                                Heavenly Creation by Human
        ᒱ͟ɛЪd֟І˂ක                                           The upper half of the painting is dominated by indigo, which not only
        ೥ࠦɪ̒௅˸᎐ᔝމ˴ሜd݅಩ݑəೌ۩ٙ˂٤d೓νଉӐ૶ீٙऎֵ                     renders the boundless sky but also carries the swimming fishes like
        ছו༱ഹ༷௡f̥Ԉ̬৳ᘰॸε੹eڀ७΢ମٙᆠ੭௡၇અ༷ՉගdՉ                     a clear sea. One of them is particularly large, guarding its partners. In
                                                            the lower half of the painting, a romantic pastel tone is used to colour
        ʕɓ৳ږරЍ༷ٙ௡ʱ̶̮၂dίɪ˙߰ςᚐഹІʉٙྫМfӬࡁ̙݅                     the infinite world of the sea, in which the rocks look like rolling hills.
        ɪʆɨऎdɦ̙ɪ˂ɝήd֟ν൉Ꮂছݺᜳݺତfɨ̒௅ʱۆ˸ईဘٙ                     If one looks closely, five human faces can be seen hidden among the
        ४ሜัݑऎֵٙೌᇊ˰ޢd຅ʕऎֵͩ෯߰ᐽዑٙʆএၧַৎͿd߰ڐ                     hills. Such precious imagination makes the scene comparable to the
        ᝈʘd̙޶ՑʞੵɛᑕᒯӚՉʕd͍ᝈሧഹࠬ౻dɓ࢝ᖵஔ࢕ၥˌုᘆ                     great fantasy work “Classic of Mountains and Seas”. Chan’s love for
        ٙซ྅d˿Ъۜ๰೯ν˜ʆऎ຾™ছٙޜփମሳfͦΈהʿʘஈdೌʔ                     nature and his childlike heart are evident in this painting.
        ̙Ԉ௓၅ഛ࿁І್ٙᆠฌʿԏɿছٙഁːf                                 Mr Johnson Chang, a renowned curator and dealer of contemporary
        ࠰ಥᖵஔޢഹΤપ˓ੵ཰ʠፋʲٙ၈௓၅ഛމ˜၅Ь™dίɞ´ϋ˾ੵ                     Chinese art in Hong Kong, said, “Mr Chan’s fantastic landscapes since
        ˤʥމܝ͛ʘࣛdʊڐɞɤ๋ٙ௓၅ഛึձ˼ඝʕ̈൑dҪ঩ሔᖵfੵ                     the 1970s have been characterized by bizarre and absurd scenes. The
        ཰ʠԊj˜၅Ьɖɤϋ˾˸Ըٙփˌʆ˥˰ޢdจྤᕎփঞሖdɪ˂ɝ                     structure of the paintings is extraordinary, but the brushstrokes are
        ήdग़৺ʹટf೥ٙഐ࿴̈ग़ɝʷd̙݊ɨഅຯקdІ͟ଟٜdϞν                      childish, free and straightforward as if returning to the innocence of a
                                                            child.” In such a highly commercialized and modernized city as Hong
        Ϋూഁॆ™fί࠰ಥவᅵɓࡈ৷ܓਠุʷeତ˾ʷٙே̹ʕd௓၅ഛՉ                     Kong, Chan’s works are like a magical theatre that transcends reality.
